Introduction of exported types of 

Iran’s pistachio has long had many customers all over the world, and even now it has its own customers despite the many competitors and problems facing traders.

Iran’s main competitors in pistachio exports are America and Turkey, America spends most of its pistachio production on its domestic consumption, and Turkey has not yet reached Iran’s production volume of pistachios, and for this reason, Iran’s pistachios are still the first to be exported.

But let’s introduce the types of Iranian export pistachios.

In the world, there are generally 3 types of pistachios with Latin names, which are:

• Long pistachios (Long)
• Round pistachios (Round)
• Spherical pistachios, which are generally large (Jumbo)

The things mentioned above are commonly used all over the world, but the naming of pistachios in Iran is a little different from other countries.

In Iran, pistachios are named Ahmed Aghaei, Badami, Akbari, Fandoghi, Kaleh Ghochi, and so on.

But if we want to compare these pistachio cultivars with the common international names and see which category these pistachio cultivars belong to, we can refer to the following composition:

• Akbari, Ahmad Aghaei and Badami = Long pistachios
• Fandoghi or Ohadi = Round pistachios
• Kaleh Ghochi, which is one of the oldest pistachios = Jumbo pistachio

Badami pistachio

This type of pistachio is considered as long pistachio. Almond pistachios are mostly produced and cultivated in Kerman, Yazd and Khorasan provinces, but the highest production was in Khorasan province.

The size of this type of pistachio usually starts from 26 and can be found up to 38.

The customers of this pistachio variety are mostly China, Afghanistan and Russia.

Ahmed Aghaei Pistachio

Ahmad Aghaei is considered as one of the long pistachios. The cultivation and production of this type of pistachio is mostly done in Kerman province.

Ahmad Aghaei’s pistachio size starts from 23 and continues to 32.

The customers of this pistachio variety are mostly European countries.

Nearly 90% of the production of this product is exported abroad.

 

Akbari Pistachio

This variety of pistachio is considered one of the most famous exported pistachios of Iran. Akbari pistachios, like Ahmad Aghaei and Badami, is placed in the category of long pistachios.

This pistachio is known as Iranian pistachio due to its popularity in the world.

Akbari export pistachios are grown and produced in sizes 20 to 28. The cities of Kerman, Yazd, Semnan and Khorasan host the cultivation of this variety of pistachio, but the highest amount of production is in Kerman.

Due to the luxury appearance and also the high price of this pistachio variety, most of the customers of this pistachio variety are from Persian Gulf countries.

Fandoghi or Ohadi Pistachio

This variety of pistachio is placed in the Round category due to its spherical appearance.

The highest amount of pistachio cultivation and production as well as export of Iran is related to Fandoghi pistachio.

Fandoghi or Ohadi pistachio is available in sizes 28 to 40, and because this pistachio variety can be cultivated in many cities of Iran, this pistachio variety has the highest amount of pistachio production in Iran.

Due to the small size of this pistachio variety, it is easier to export this pistachio to European countries, and due to less pest infestation, this pistachio variety will have fewer health problems on its way to European countries.

Kaleh Ghochi Pistachio

This type of pistachio is known as Jumbo and it is considered one of the biggest smiling pistachios produced in Iran.

Kaleh Ghochi pistachios are cultivated and produced from size 20 to 28 and due to the larger production volume, this pistachio has a more reasonable price than Akbari.

This variety of pistachio can be exported to many Asian and European countries. Of course, this pistachio variety is not suitable for some countries such as Canada, India and Iraq.

The items mentioned above are among the most popular and famous export pistachios of Iran.

In addition to the famous export pistachios that were introduced, there are other export pistachios that we will only mention below:

• Abbas Ali pistachios
• Shah Pasand Pistachios
• Khanjari pistachios
• Sefid nogh pistachios
• Qazvini pistachios

In general, it is not possible to say which pistachio variety is more suitable for export because each pistachio variety has its own customers. For example, Akbari pistachio is considered one of the most famous pistachios in Iran, but the popularity of this type of pistachio is much less in European countries, and the customers of this type of pistachio are mostly the Persian Gulf countries.

In general, the export of Iran’s pistachio cultivars will be as follows.

Pistachios are mainly exported to European countries.

More elongated pistachios such as Akbari and Ahmad Aghaei are mostly exported to Persian Gulf countries.

– Pistachio paste
– Pistachio butter
– Chopped pistachios
– Pistachio powder
They are used in the preparation of various food products, and their main customers are food manufacturing factories.

What countries are Iran’s export pistachio customers?

Iranian pistachios are exported to many continents of the world, such as Asia, Europe, and Africa.

European countries do not accept every type of pistachio due to stricter laws regarding aflatoxin, and American countries prefer to import their pistachios from America, and Iranian pistachios are mostly exported to the southern part of the American continent.
